The Highs and Lows of The Red Carpet Award Season

by Eden Herbstman

Award season not only recognizes the most outstanding actors and singers of the year, but it also marks the prelude to spring fashion. If designers aren’t custom making dresses, the stars are wearing the clothes fresh off the spring runway (the spring fashion always shows in the winter.) The Golden Globes, SAGs, and Grammys had all been nights celebrating the arts, but a major component to the nights were the fashionhits and misses.
The 2010 Golden Globes was a scale of extremes; the absolute gorgeous and hideous. Oliva Wilde, Emily Blunt, and Penelope Cruz were a few of the night’s best dressed, ranging from strapless gowns to elegant black floor length couture. Most actresses who were expected to shine on the carpet in fact fizzled. Diane Kruger looked like she had been dipped in bubble gum and threw a white leather belt on over it. Jennifer Aniston had potential to rock a little black dress, but the slit riding all the way up her leg ruined her outfit. Now it is fair to keep in mind that the weather on the red carpet had been miserable, so that did infringe upon hairstyles and shoes.
Normally, I think the Golden Globes displays better red carpet fashion, but the SAGs showed up the Globes for the second round of awards. The SAGs aren’t as high fashion as the Golden Globes, so actress’s fashion ranged from couture gowns to sophisticated mini dresses. Kate Hudson 100% made up for her Golden Globes style. She again wore white, but this time kept it classy in Pucci and added a bit of an edge with its open back. Marion Cotillard also wore white but went for a short mini cut which looked great. Drew Barrymore, who kept in plain for the Golden Globes, did have one of the best hairstyles for the SAGs – a sophisticated yet trendy updo.
The only award show where the stars can show off their crazy and creative styles, though, is in fact the Grammys. Everyone anticipates Lady Gaga to don the wildest and wackiest outfit of all, but surprisingly her Grammy outfit was elegant in its own unique way. Giorgio Armani custom designed all of Lady Gag’s outfits for the night, but her best look of the night was her red carpet solar inspired dress. I thought she looked good on the red carpet: usually she just looks out of her mind, but on the red carpet she kept her personal style but this time she looked pretty and a bit toned down. I mean, not everyone can pull of yellow hair, pink lips, and 7 inch heels. Even though Lady Gaga shone in her own way, other stars stole her title for best dressed. Fergie looked gorgeous in a blue mini accented with a gold band from her shoulder to the waist. Keri Hilson wore the opposite of a fun mini dress and chose a strapless floor length Dolce and Gabana blush gown, which she looked amazing in. These contrasting styles just further prove anything goes for the Grammys.
Not only do the award shows preview spring trends to come, but they also are a chance to express the couture side of fashion, which isn’t exhibited in every day life. The beauty of these awards shows not only give a nod to the best performers, but has become a chance for an expression of style.
